ACDR Spring Summit addresses the country’s affordability crisis

In May, more than 270 debt relief industry leaders gathered in Las Vegas for ACDR’s 2026 Spring Summit. With a growing number of Americans turning to credit cards for basic necessities, affordability and the need for solutions to the problem of unsecured debt were a common theme. Attendees shared perspectives from across the industry and explored unified strategies to expand awareness and access to debt relief, with discussions focused on research, public affairs, government affairs, grassroots advocacy, and compliance.

ACDR President and CEO Jason Mulvihill opened the event with an update on the organization’s strategy and the role debt relief companies can play in helping address the nation’s affordability challenges.

“Your companies have helped millions of consumers survive personal crises and economic disruption,” said Mulvihill. “The story of debt relief — helping consumers regain their financial freedom after a job loss, a life-altering medical diagnosis, or another adverse event — is an American story. When we tell this story with data and research, with consumers’ own words, and with our own strict industry rules and standards guiding us, the Republicans and Democrats across the table from us nod in agreement. It is like a light comes on. They understand why you and your companies are an asset, particularly in today’s economy.”

Mulvihill’s remarks set the stage for a day of in-depth discussions about ACDR’s strategy, evolving industry trends, and the significant pressures consumers face today.

Modernizing our approach to compliance and understanding the regulatory landscape

ACDR member companies are trusted partners for consumers in financial distress. A strong compliance and accreditation program is key to building trust. As Mulvihill said in his address, “ACDR accreditation means something in the marketplace — to consumers, to the press, and to policymakers” and is a signal ACDR members “go above and beyond state and federal rules.”

In this spirit, ACDR Head of Compliance Stacey Silva outlined ACDR’s approach to reinforcing and streamlining its accreditation standards and monitoring. A discussion on key state and federal regulatory trends followed, helping attendees better understand shifting state regulations and prevent roadblocks before they arise.

An integrated approach to expanding and defending our license to operate

ACDR President and CEO Jason Mulvihill was joined by Mike Lukso, Rob Swanger, and Andrew Shaw, heads of Government Affairs, Public Affairs and Research, respectively. The panel addressed the importance of growing the industry at a time when an increasing number of consumers are struggling to keep up with their bills. They stressed the importance of storytelling, supported by sound research and the active participation from members. This storytelling can help educate policymakers about our industry, and the positive impacts it has for families throughout the country.

AI’s role in shaping the future of debt relief

Later, a panel of experts explored the rise of self-enrollment and do-it-yourself debt relief solutions alongside the transformative role of AI in debt relief operations, customer service, and DIY consumer experiences. Panelists highlighted emerging use cases, with several speakers describing AI as “an enhancement, not a replacement.”

Of course, our industry will always remain focused on the consumers we serve. A central theme throughout the discussion was the importance of maintaining trust and transparency with families facing financial hardship. While self-service and DIY debt relief tools are expected to grow significantly, panelists agreed that human empathy and oversight will remain essential. The broader consensus was that AI’s greatest near-term impact will likely come through efficiency and personalization rather than fully autonomous debt settlement.

An inspirational story to motivate us for the road ahead

New technologies and policy developments will present challenges along with opportunities, which is why ACDR invited keynote speaker Anthony Robles to offer lessons regarding resilience and rising to meet the competition.

Born without his right leg, Anthony Robles overcame every obstacle to become a 2011 NCAA wrestling champion, a three-time All-American, a Nike athlete, author, and the subject of the 2024 documentary Unstoppable, sharing lessons on resilience and overcoming adversity.

His remarks provided a powerful reminder that adversity does not excuse complacency — it demands resilience. This statement is true for both our industry and the consumers who come to us for help. Robles spoke about turning obstacles into advantages through discipline, preparation, and belief in a larger purpose. That same mindset applies to our industry today: we must face unfair scrutiny from rival industries head-on, earn trust through performance, and stay relentlessly focused on helping consumers regain financial stability, even in the face of debt they never thought they would escape.
