The Association for Consumer Debt Relief is fighting for financial freedom across the country

Americans are drowning in unsecured debt, and now they have a louder voice fighting for them.

Through a recent merger, the Association for Consumer Debt Relief (ACDR) brought together the American Association for Debt Resolution and the Consumer Debt Relief Initiative, creating a new organization that will advocate with a unified voice for enhanced access to debt relief products and services across the nation.

With the merger, ACDR now represents 72 companies.

The joining of these two groups, and the appointment of our new President and CEO Jason Mulvihill, comes at a crucial time for American families.

Credit delinquencies at a five-year high

Recent data from VantageScore revealed that credit delinquencies in the United States reached a five-year high earlier this year. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, total household debt reached $18.2 trillion in the first quarter of 2025. Credit card balances currently stand at $1.18 trillion.

These numbers are not just statistics — they are a major warning sign to state and federal policymakers.

Millions of Americans are facing unmanageable levels of debt from credit cards, medical bills, personal loans, and many other types of unsecured debt. They feel trapped and unsure of where to turn for viable solutions.

They need to know about real options with proven records of success.

They need debt relief.

How does debt relief help consumers?

Debt relief is the process of helping consumers negotiate with creditors to lower their debt, avoid bankruptcy, and preserve financial stability. It is a proven, effective process that saves Americans nearly $1.7 billionannually. (The industry also creates jobs, contributes to economic growth, and enhances the country’s overall financial stability by ensuring creditors recoup at least some of what they are owed.)

Too many consumers do not yet know about the debt relief option, however. Neither does the press or U.S. policymakers. And even if they have heard of debt relief, Americans may not fully understand how it differs from other financial services products, the type of consumer protections that ACDR member companies strive to adhere to, or how the industry is regulated.

At ACDR, we believe financial freedom should not be dependent on zip code — consumers in every part of the nation should have access to sound and effective debt relief services. Sadly, that is not what is happening today. As one example, if you live in New York state you have access to the types of products and services ACDR members offer. If you happen to live just over the border in New Jersey, you do not.

This disparity is unjust — especially considering that engaging with an ACDR-accredited debt relief provider can save a consumer thousands of dollars while eliminating their unsecured debt in about 48 months. Through our Access50 initiative, we work to ensure consumers have access to debt relief in states like New Jersey where these products and services are currently off the table.

What is the Association For Consumer Debt Relief?

ACDR is the singular leading industry voice to ensure Americans have access to high-quality debt relief services.

Our mission is to educate consumers and policymakers about debt relief, uphold high industry standards, and expand access to accredited services nationwide. We also prioritize transparency so consumers know exactly what their options are and can chart a path that works best for their unique situations.

ACDR members are dedicated to upholding the highest standards across the debt relief industry. We work with our member companies to help them meet strict ethical standards and stay compliant with state and federal regulations. ACDR’s standards go beyond the minimum regulatory requirements in setting expectations for the industry. Through our ACDR member community, we are building a network of accredited, trusted partners who share a vision of how we can best serve consumers.

ACDR’s increased advocacy efforts and strong member commitment to doing the right thing, combined with doubling-down on spreading the word to consumers, will bring the option of debt relief to more people across the country. Now the industry is speaking with a unified voice and deeper expertise to policymakers, the press, and the public.

With delinquencies climbing and household debt growing, Americans need the freedom to make choices that best address their unique needs and challenges — and they need to know about, and have confidence in, the solutions available to them. By coming together under one organization committed to leverage the knowledge and energy of its members on behalf of consumers, ACDR is equipped to advance this mission.

ACDR is proud to represent leaders of an industry dedicated to helping Americans handle debt responsibly and achieve financial freedom. Our 72 member companies look forward to working with each other — and with policymakers, regulators, and advocates — to expand access to high-quality debt relief services across the country.
